Do you lose all your results when you receive a compliment? What happens when someone says you’ve lost too much weight? Do you stop what you’re doing and gain all the weight back?
Because this happened to me. I was so proud of my 15 kg weight loss that I felt unstoppable. Then, my family said: ‘Hey, you look too skinny. You should take better care of yourself. You’ve lost too much weight.’
But that was just their perception. I felt great. Yet something made me doubt myself. It was probably the doorway to going back to my old self.
Falling Back to My Old Self
You see, this happened when I was just finishing my dieting programs. I was so happy that I was taking things slow. Fear was still there with me. Fear of gaining all that weight back. Because I knew it felt right this time. You could see it in my eyes.
Then, as I listened to my family, I began to gradually increase my portion size. I would no longer say no to food that I did not want to eat. In the process, I lost my standards that I had worked so hard to raise. And I was back. Frustrated, dissatisfied with my choices, and blaming everyone.
‘I can’t do this all over again.’ I said to myself while crying looking in the mirror at my once again overweight body. ‘Why did they say that? Why couldn’t they just be happy and supportive?’
Still, this is what happens. People react to things in unexpected ways. They react based on their feeling and what they know to be true. And I did the same. I knew I wanted to eat more and I knew that in a weird way they had given me permission to do so.
As I was there, looking at myself in the mirror, I was so angry that I could smash it. I cried and cried. Looked at myself again. And could not believe that I had given up on all my hard work. Just to be back again in my unhappy and lost self.
Looking so deep into my cried-out eyes, I noticed it all. I realized something that would change my life forever.
The Permanent Way to Change
When I made the decision to lose weight, I started with what most of us know: diets. I went through all of them. I starved myself. And it almost felt like I was punishing myself. Then, I found a dietary approach that made a difference. I liked the foods, I liked the meal plans, and the workouts. Yet, I was still operating from that part of me that’s weak.
Permanent results come from the inside out. They don’t put their imprint on us when we force our bodies to behave differently. When we follow diets that work or don’t. Diets that punish us and make us feel even weaker.
That was my realization. No matter how strong I had been to have followed all those diets and lost so much weight, I was still acting as a weak person. I did not have the courage to stand up for what I believed in. Because I was not sure what to believe.
But that day, when I was at my lowest point, thinking of all the people I let down, I saw myself. Deep down in my teary eyes, there I was trapped and screaming to be set free. Because I was strong. I knew right then and there that my journey was no longer going to be hard. Once I realized that my strength was in me, I pushed through. And never looked back.
People’s comments were welcome but no longer part of who I was. Because that woman that I set free is strong and doesn’t let opinions or simple words shatter what she chooses to build.
