You know the benefits of eating healthy food. And you also know how amazing you feel after doing a workout.
But how do you stay motivated?
How to keep going when ‘life’ gets in the way? When it seems it’s easier and easier to forget the commitments we made to ourselves?
In our modern world, temptations are all over the place. And it sure feels nice to sneak out of a healthy lifestyle and do things that ‘we’re not allowed to’.
I’ve been there. My on and off relationship with motivation. Until I cracked the code. So much so that it comes as second nature to me to choose what’s good & healthy.
It wasn’t like that in the beginning … not even in the middle. I used to say ‘why bother’ or ‘it’s just one day; it can’t possibly hurt’. Or I would get discouraged by all the things that I needed to manage.
Next, I’m going to share 5 ways to stay motivated.
Don’t overthink it & do not look at the entire process
Thoughts have the power of getting you out of taking action. It’s so easy. You start by saying ‘oh but I don’t have time’, ‘I’ll do it later’ and that later never comes. Or you visualize the entire process and you know every step you’re going to take. There are 2 things that happen when you do that.
Firstly, when you visualize the entire process and it feels like you’ve already done it. So, why bother doing it again? Secondly, you’ll say to yourself that it’s too tough. And you will never start.
Just go with the flow. Don’t even think about what move comes next in your workout. Pay attention to what happens right then and there. Visualize the muscles working and your body getting stronger.
That’s wonderful. But how do you actually do it? You make it urgent. You leave something to the last minute so you have no choice but to do it. Tell yourself that you only have time to do the workout in the morning, for instance. And make it urgent for you. Wake up, get it done. And move on with your day.
Use other activities that you do with ease
Look at the activities you do that need no special motivation. What motivates you, what drives you to do those things? For me, it’s playing games. What drives me is the fun, fantasy-like atmosphere, the fact that they’re easy to do, and there are rewards involved. So, how can we bring these to exercise or healthy eating?
I always choose workouts and foods that I like. And I use my mind to create the fantasy-like atmosphere to my lifestyle as well.
Experiment for 3 days
You know I like my 3 day quests. Choose something to experiment with for 3 days. Make it fun and exciting. For instance, choose to eat in the same room/place for 3 days. Whenever you catch yourself in another place, bring yourself back. And record your findings.
Understand that we only have one life. What would you like your life to look like? What would you like to experience? Raise your standards and stick to them. One thing I don’t like is lying to myself. I do have my flaws but I focus on the positive. You have the power to design the life you want. Choose what’s good for you. And this is actually the most motivating one of all.
If there’s something that I want you to take out of this all is to keep it simple. Always. No matter how hard things may seem, you always have a choice. You can always choose the path of least resistance. Stay happy, motivated, and have fun!
